Hobonichi 5-Year Techo 2027–2031: How Much Japanese You Would Read Each Day

The 5-Year Techo is a five-year diary: each spread is one date, with a slot for that date in each of 2027, 2028, 2029, 2030 and 2031 on the left, and a grid page on the right. Hobonichi's English type guide for 2027, read on 27 September 2026, lists it only as a Japanese book, in A6 and in a larger A5, and searching Amazon US for "Hobonichi 5-Year Techo 2027", and again with "English", I found no English one.

Before the rest: I work for a Japanese planner maker, which competes with Hobonichi; my employer also sells a five-year diary, which is one reason other makers' five-year diaries are not assessed here. Hobonichi is not a customer or a supplier of mine, I have no business with it, and I do not use my employer or its products as a source or an example. I have not handled a 5-Year Techo. What is below comes from Hobonichi's English and Japanese product pages, its type guide and the product photographs on its A6 store page, and from two Amazon listings read under two US ZIP codes, all on 27 September 2026. Where I offer a view of my own, it is labelled.

The short answer, from a photograph Hobonichi publishes of one spread of the 2027 book: the Japanese on the part you write in every day is the date, written with the characters 月 and 日, and one character per year for the day of the week. Seven characters cover every weekday; the key is below. On the evidence of Hobonichi's pages, the rest of the Japanese is in places you do not need to read in order to write your daily lines, which is my reading, set out further down. Before you use it, one fact that is not about language: an Original cover does not fit the A6, nor a Cousin cover the A5.

One day's page, as Hobonichi photographs it

Hobonichi's A6 product page for the 2027 book includes a photograph of the spread for 1 January. What is printed on it:

• At the top of the left page: 1月1日. The numbers are ordinary Arabic numerals; 月 marks the month and 日 the day, so it reads "January 1".
• Five slots below it, one per year, each labelled with the year in Arabic numerals and one character: 2027 金, 2028 土, 2029 月, 2030 火, 2031 水. The rest of each slot is grid.
• The right page is grid, with a tab marked 1 at the edge and a Japanese quote at the foot.

Hobonichi's English description says the left side "only shows the date and the corresponding day of the week for each of the five years", and "Public holidays and the traditional lunar calendar dates are not marked." On the quote, its pages differ: the description says the Daily Quotes are "At the bottom of each page", the specification says "One quote per two-page spread (Japanese)", and in the photograph there is one, on the right-hand page.

The seven characters

月 and 日 are the same characters as in the date heading; on their own, beside a year, they are Monday and Sunday. You can check the key against the photograph on Hobonichi's A6 page: 1 January 2027 falls on a Friday, and the 2027 slot is marked 金; 1 January 2028 is a Saturday, and the 2028 slot is marked 土.

The yearly calendars at the front, one year per page for 2027 to 2031, use the same characters in Hobonichi's photograph of the 2028 and 2029 pages: month numbers in Arabic numerals, and a row of the seven characters over each month, starting with 月.

Here is my reading, as an opinion rather than a finding. If what you want is a line or a paragraph a day, in five rows you fill in over five years, the Japanese you have to read to do that is the date and the weekday, and the table above covers the weekday. That rests on one photograph of one spread and on Hobonichi's description; I have not seen the other spreads.

What stays in Japanese

• The quote on each spread, in Japanese on Hobonichi's specification.
• The zodiac beside each year on the yearly calendars, which the type guide mentions ("Listed next to the year is the Chinese zodiac animal for that year"); in the photograph it is written in Japanese.
• The bonus pages at the back. Hobonichi's specification lists Yearly Memo Page, Remember This, Gifts, Addresses, My Lists, My Favorite Things and Personal Notes, and its description says "These pages are in Japanese." The store photographs of the 2027 A6 book show a mix, page by page:
• Gifts: English heading, a Japanese line beneath it, and columns for date, item and memo in Japanese beside a "to / from" column in English.
• Addresses: English heading; the name, email and address labels in Japanese.
• My Lists: English heading, a Japanese line beneath it; each list is headed "Title" and numbered 1 to 10.
• Personal Notes: English heading, Japanese lines beneath it, and Japanese labels for name, date of birth, address, phone and email.
• My Favorite Things: heading and prompts in Japanese.
• Yearly memo pages: one per year, headed with the year and 年 ("year"), with a "Bookmark" label.
• The name on the front, foil-stamped ほぼ日5年手帳 ("Hobonichi 5-Year Techo") in Hobonichi's photograph; the spine carries the five years in Arabic numerals.
• The instruction booklet. Hobonichi says the book comes in a turquoise paper box with "an instruction booklet and a test-writing sheet". The booklet in its photograph is titled in Japanese; I have not seen inside it, or the test sheet.

Covers, and the book without one

Hobonichi's A6 page: "Please note that covers made for the Hobonichi Techo Original are not compatible." Its A5 page says the same of covers for the Cousin. Each size has its own 5-Year cover, which I have not assessed. Hobonichi says it can be used without a cover, describing it as "wrapped in a calm, warm brown with gold foil-pressed accents", in a material that "feels natural in your hands, so it's perfectly comfortable to use without a cover", with a dark brown ribbon bookmark.

Hobonichi calls the sizes A6 and A5; the measurements are its own and are larger than the paper sizes of those names, and the A6 is much thicker than the Original. Both use Hobonichi's 3.7 mm grid on Tomoe River paper, stitch-bound, and Hobonichi says the book "opens flat at 180 degrees". The store figures are Hobonichi's shelf prices; the Amazon listing carries its own price, which you will see there. Shipping and duty from Hobonichi's store are covered in the Original's file.

Reasons to pass

• You want every page in English. The quotes, the zodiac, the bonus pages' explanations and many of their labels and the booklet's title are Japanese, as above.
• You want holidays on the daily page. Hobonichi says public holidays are not marked there. Whether the yearly calendars mark any, the photograph does not show clearly enough for me to say.
• You want to keep using an Original or Cousin cover. See above.
• You want a start other than January. The 2027 book runs from 1 January 2027 to 31 December 2031, and the only edition Hobonichi's specification lists is January-start.

Where it is sold

On Amazon US, 27 September 2026, the two 2027–2031 listings I found, the A6 (ASIN B0H6P489JN) and the A5 (ASIN B0H6P8BM98), both have "Japanese Book" in the title, and were sold by Hobonichi Co., Ltd. [Official], the account Hobonichi uses for its other books there. I read both from a New York ZIP (10001) and a Los Angeles one (90012), opened the all-offers panel each time, and no other seller appeared; the method, and how to confirm the seller yourself, is in the Original's file. Hobonichi also sells both sizes in its own store, at the prices above.

Not assessed on this page, among others: the 5-Year covers and gift sets, Hobonichi's other formats, and any other maker's five-year diary. They are listed so you know they were left out, not because they were weighed and found wanting.
