One affiliate link appears on this page, placed twice: once after the short answer and once in the last section, both to the same Amazon US listing, the one-book Japanese Cousin, whose featured offer was Hobonichi's own when I read it on 7 and 8 October 2026; on both days that listing's all-offers panel also named a second seller, as set out below. The two-book Avec is discussed on this page but not linked for payment. Amazon's prices and stock are not reproduced on this page. How this site works.
Choosing the Japanese Cousin for 2027: the Avec Question First, Then What the Edition Prints
The Cousin is Hobonichi's A5 book: a page for every day, plus weekly pages. For January 2027 it is made in English and in Japanese; the English one has its own file on this site, linked where it comes up below. This page is for the reader who does not read Japanese and is weighing the Japanese Cousin even so. It makes no attempt to decide whether an A5 daily book is the right type; that is the planner guide's question.
Before the rest: I work for a Japanese planner maker, which competes with the makers named on this page; none of them is a customer or a supplier of mine, I have no business with any of them, and I do not use my employer or its products as a source or an example. I have not handled either form of this book. The sources are Hobonichi's English and Japanese product pages for the one-book Cousin and for the Avec, its English type guide, and two Amazon US listings, each read logged out under two US ZIP codes on 7 and 8 October 2026. Everything here is assembled from published specifications, not from testing; opinions are marked as opinions.
The short answer. If you want one book for the year and cannot read Japanese, the English Cousin is, in my view, the plainer choice: by Hobonichi's specifications the two editions have the same body, the same size, weight, page counts, grid and Monday-start week, and what the Japanese edition adds is printed Japanese. The Japanese edition is for two readers. One wants the Avec, the same year as two half-year books, which Hobonichi's comparison chart listed as a Japanese-edition form only when I read it on 7 October 2026; where I looked for an English Avec, and when, is recorded in the English Cousin's file. The other wants the Japanese print on the page, the daily quote and the calendar notes, and accepts not reading it. The Avec's figures come first below, then what the edition prints. The one-book edition is the listing linked here; the Avec is not linked for payment.

One book or the Avec
The Avec splits the year: Book 1 is January to June, Book 2 July to December. Hobonichi's Avec page says the layout "and specifications are essentially the same as the standard Cousin", with "some differences in the calendar period covered and the number of bonus pages". The figures are from the two specification pages, read 7 October 2026; the prices are Hobonichi's store's US display on 8 October.
| One book | Avec, Book 1 | Avec, Book 2 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maker's listed weight | about 445 g | about 260 g | about 260 g |
| Thickness | 18 mm | 10 mm | 10 mm |
| Pages | 544 | 288 | 288 |
| Daily pages | 1 January to 31 December 2027 (377) | 1 January to 30 June 2027 (187) | 1 July to 31 December 2027 (190) |
| Monthly calendars | December 2026 to March 2028 (32) | December 2026 to July 2027 (16) | June 2027 to January 2028 (16) |
| Weekly pages | 28 December 2026 to 2 January 2028 (106) | 28 December 2026 to 4 July 2027 (54) | 28 June 2027 to 2 January 2028 (54) |
| Yearly index | January to December 2027 | January to December 2027 | July 2027 to June 2028 |
| Memo pages | 6 | 8 | 4 |
| Hobonichi's store, US display, 8 October 2026 | $43.00 | $48.00 for the pair |
What the table says, read both ways.
- For the Avec. The book in your hand is about 260 g against about 445 g, by the maker's figures. Memo pages come to 12 across the two books against 6. Book 2's yearly index runs to June 2028, half a year past the one-book edition's.
- Against the Avec. The pair is the heavier set, about 520 g together. At the store's US display it was $5.00 more than the one book. Book 2's monthly calendars stop at January 2028, where the one-book edition's run to March 2028. June and July have monthly calendars in both books, and the week of 28 June 2027 is in both.
- Bonus pages. The comparison chart's line for the Avec is that "Book 1 and 2 both include the same bonus pages as the Cousin (Japanese edition)". The Avec page says the number differs; what the difference is, I have not found stated. Hobonichi's page tells Book 1 from Book 2 by the cover: lime yellow for the first, ice blue for the second.
Both forms take the same covers: the Avec page says "You can use the same covers for the Avec as you do for the regular edition". Covers are not covered on this page.
One opinion, marked as one: if the book lives on a desk, the split buys nothing and costs the last two months of monthly calendars; if it travels, the Avec is the lighter book on any given day, and the extra memo pages are a small bonus on top.
The Avec is not linked for payment. Its page in Hobonichi's English store is the Japanese Cousin Avec Books page (not a paid link), and its Amazon US listing is ASIN B0H6P6MCD5.
What the Japanese edition prints, and what it does not change
Each item below is from Hobonichi's English specification page for the Japanese Cousin or from its type guide, read 7 October 2026, and is the Japanese edition's side of the comparison; the English edition's side, with its own table of what it has and lacks, is in the English Cousin's file.
- A quote on every page. The specification line is "One per day (Japanese)". The English edition's is one quote per two-page spread, in English.
- Seven items of "Listed Information". The day and the week of the year, the old-calendar date, rokuyō (the six-day cycle, on the monthly calendars), the solar terms, Japanese holidays, and the moon phase. The English edition's line names three: the day and the week of the year, and the moon phase.
- The "Remember This" page. The type guide says that in the Japanese edition this page "features a seasonal compendium". It says nothing of the kind for the English edition.
- Bonus pages marked as this edition only. In the type guide's comparison chart: Solar Terms, Emergency Preparedness, Age Table, Conversion Chart, Getting the most of Hobonichi. The English edition's own three are Words to Remember, 365 Days Check-Off Sheet and Getting the Most Out of Your Hobonichi Techo.
- What does not change. Size, weight, 544 pages, the 3.7 mm grid and the Monday-start week are the same figures on both editions' specification pages, and they are in the English Cousin's table, linked above; the 106 weekly pages and six memo pages are the same on both specification pages too. In the comparison chart read on 7 October 2026, every form of the Cousin, both editions and the Avec, is shown as Monday start.
The quote, the calendar notes and the edition-only bonus pages are printed in Japanese; the dates are numerals. Hobonichi's Japanese-language page for this book adds 雑節 and 記念日, a further set of seasonal days and a set of commemorative days, to the items above, the same two the Japanese Original's page carries; what a Japanese-edition daily page looks like, where the numerals are and where the Japanese is, is described from Hobonichi's photographs of the A6 book in the Japanese Original's file. The Cousin also has weekly pages, a section the Original does not have, and I have not seen a photograph of a Japanese-edition Cousin page.
When another page is the right one
- You want to read what is printed. The English Cousin's file is the book with the English quotes; it also tells apart the two "Cousin English" listings on Amazon US.
- You want a Sunday-start week. No form of the Cousin had one in the comparison chart I read on 7 October 2026; the one Sunday-start book in that chart is the A6 Japanese Original, whose file is linked above.
- You want a smaller book. The A6 daily book in English is the English Original.
- You do not want to buy a cover at all. The HON's file covers the English edition.
Not assessed on this page, among others: the April-start Japanese Cousin, the Japanese Original Avec, the Cousin covers, and any other maker's A5 daily planner. They are listed so you know they were left out, not because they were weighed and found wanting.
Buying it
Two routes, in this order.
| Where | What I read there, and when |
|---|---|
| → Hobonichi's own English store, Japanese Cousin, one book (not a paid link) | Viewed as a US customer on 7 and 8 October 2026, the page priced the book at $43.00, marked "Available". I did not go to checkout; what the store adds for shipping and import charges, and its terms, are in the English Original's file and the guide to buying from Japan. |
| → Hobonichi Techo 2027 Cousin, Japanese edition, one book, on Amazon US (ASIN B0H6PK82L6; featured offer Hobonichi's on 8 October 2026, check the "Sold by" line) (paid link) | Under ZIP 10001 and then 90012, on 7 October and again on 8 October 2026, the featured offer (the "Sold by" line beside the buy button) was Hobonichi Co., Ltd. [Official], seller ID A2HG22EPTK8H5A. On both days the all-offers panel also named NinumuJapan (seller ID A1RSAQFM4OM8YN). I have not assessed that seller and name it only so you can recognise the "Sold by" line. |
So read the "Sold by" line before you buy; the seller on the day you look may not be the one I found. How Hobonichi's seller name is tied to its seller ID is described in the English Original's file. Price and stock are on the listing.
