Hobonichi Techo 2027 HON, English Edition: A Buyer's File

The Hobonichi Original and Cousin are made to go inside a separate cover. The HON is the version for people who would rather not buy one: Hobonichi's type guide calls it "a book-like techo that you can easily use without a cover", with "a hardcover design already attached to the book", and its Japanese product page describes it as 手帳本体とカバーが一体になった張り手帳, a planner whose book and cover are one piece. The cover is cloth with a matte finish, クロス張り in the Japanese page's words. It comes in A6 and A5, each with an English edition.

Before the rest: I work for a Japanese planner maker, which competes with the makers named on this page; none of them is a customer or a supplier of mine, I have no business with any of them, and I do not use my employer or its products as a source or an example. I have not handled a HON. The sources are Hobonichi's English and Japanese product pages and type guide, and eight Amazon listings read under two US ZIP codes, all on 26 September 2026; opinions are marked as mine.

If you have not yet settled between a daily page and a weekly one, or on A6 against A5, the planner guide comes first. This page answers three narrower questions.

Three questions that decide it

1. Do you already own a cover you like? The Original's and the Cousin's specification pages each carry a "Compatible Techo Covers" line, naming Original (A6) covers and Cousin (A5) covers. The HON's specification pages, for the Slash design in both sizes, carry no such line. The HON is also a little larger than the book it matches: 156 × 110 × 16 mm for the A6 against the Original's 148 × 105 × 15, and 214 × 152 × 20 mm for the A5 against the Cousin's 210 × 148 × 18. So Hobonichi does not say a cover you own for the Original or the Cousin fits a HON, and I have not tried one. If you already have a cover you like, the HON is paying for something you own. That is my view, not Hobonichi's.

2. Which pages do you want? Hobonichi's type guide says the HON's "format and contents are the same as the Original and Cousin". The English A6 HON's specification page matches the English Original's figures item for item: 464 pages, a 3.7 mm grid (3.45 mm on the monthly pages), 17 memo pages, no weekly pages, and the same bonus pages by name, all set out in the Original's file. The English A5 HON's page lists 544 pages, a 3.7 mm grid, 377 daily pages, a four-page yearly index, 106 pages of vertical weekly diary running from 28 December 2026 to 2 January 2028, and 6 memo pages. The first four of those match what the Cousin's file records; the Cousin's file does not record weekly or memo page counts, so I have not compared those. For the English editions of both sizes, the type guide says "The calendars do not list holidays."

If you came here from the Planner's file because you wanted a book with no cover to buy, note what the A6 HON is not: its pages are the Original's, not the Planner's. It has the 3.7 mm grid rather than the Planner's 4 mm, the Original's bonus pages rather than the Planner's size charts and packing list, and the week number on the monthly calendars only.

3. Will you need HON-specific accessories? Hobonichi's English and Japanese HON pages both mention a pencil board made for the HON, printed with a 5 mm grid, and both say that from 2027 it is sold separately: ※2027年版から、下敷きは別売りとなりました on the Japanese page, "Starting with the 2027 edition, the pencil board is sold separately" on the English one.

The outside, in figures

HON figures are from its English specification pages for the Slash design, read 26 September 2026. Original and Cousin figures are from their files on this site, read between 24 and 26 September. On the Slash pages, the store shows the price as a range; which figure applies to the English book alone, I did not establish, so the range and the single prices beside it are not like for like. Hobonichi's cover pages also show their own prices, which I have not broken down into cover-only and set prices, so this page does not add a cover to the Original or the Cousin and total them.

Designs and ASINs

On 26 September 2026 Hobonichi's English lineup, filtered to HON in English, showed five designs in each size. Four of them had 2027 English listings in each size on Amazon US. For all eight, the seller line read Hobonichi Co., Ltd. [Official] under both ZIP codes, and the seller code behind it matched Hobonichi's by the check the Original's file sets out. The ASINs are here so you can match a listing to the right design, size and year; Amazon also still lists 2026 HON books.
